Hello gardeners!
Quick reminder about the Volunteer Day 5:15 tomorrow – please come out!  Kids, neighbours, friends – everyone welcome to join in and get your hands dirty!  The team will be plainting blueberries, laying some hay (to help with moisture retention), adjust the tomato stakes and week some invasives that have sprung up near the boxes.
We’re also looking to set a Gardens BBQ date for sometime in August. More details to come.
Cheers,
Jenn

Hello Gardiners,

Thank you to all who came out a couple Saturday’s ago. It was nice to see so much progress. I wanted to share with you some plans for the south end garden.

1)      We want to start a regular volunteer work days at 4 on Wednesdays (gets dark at 5:45). Come any Wednesday you can make. Our goals are to finish the last beds  and pretty up the site.

2)      We are looking to do a grand opening BBQ on Friday March 2nd at 3pm. Start spreading the news, everyone welcome. Hoping to have members of the neighborhood in attendance.

3)      We are still renting beds for $30 a year. If you talk to someone who might be interested please have them e-mail me. Alternatively the sign-up sheets will be available on Wednesdays.

Courtney is looking at what to plant for the food bank beds and we will discuss the plan for those beds next week at the Wednesday meeting/work day. Rob I think we need more soil and bark mulch so we should discuss the best way to get that.

Let me know if any more ideas or questions and hopefully see some of you this Wednesday.

Thank you,

Andre

Hello friends of the North and South Community Gardens!

.
The sun is out today and, for a moment, we can think of Spring!  We are looking forward to our first full growing year, with the majority of the heavy-lifting work done, we’re gearing up for an excellent year.  Some site improvements will be underway the next couple of months, completion of the drip irrigation system (thank you to Kirk of Island Smart Irrigation Systems for donating the labour and know-how), building of a lean-to shelter in the North Site (thanks to the VIU carpentry department), signage, lighting improvements and various others.
.
We are now starting our campaign to fill all the community beds for March 1, 2012 – Feb 28, 2013.  Plots are available to all community members at $30 per year.  See attached agreement and info form, please complete and mail to the YPN at the address below.  If you have an existing plot, please note whether or not you’d like to keep the same plot# on the form.
.
Also if anyone needs some fresh-air or has been longing to help out, we are having a Volunteer Day Saturday Jan 28th 10am at the South End Garden (corner of Needham and Irwin Streets).  Please email Andre at andre.sullivan [at] integralwealth.com if you’re planning to attend or have any questions about what to bring.
.
As always, if you have any questions about the gardens, please email me at gardens [at] ypnanaimo.com

I wanted to extend an invitation to you to help get the south end garden ready for winter. This coming Tuesday October 25th we are looking to assemble at the corner or Irwin and Needham at 3:30. There is some work to be done with the last of the harvesting and we also plan to build a compost bin. For those interested in being a part of the gardens for the 2012 growing year we will also discuss our next steps as a community garden.

Hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Andre Sullivan

Wednesday, June 15th from 5 – 7pm there is a ‘planting’ b-b-q at 256 Needham (behind R-U Computing) to start the growing of the community garden. Everyone is welcome – garden is open to all.

Nanaimo Young Professionals who are working so hard to get these community gardens going and bring people together are looking for ways to raise money. Please go to www.refresheverything.ca and click on the $25,000 and then go to ‘revitalize abandoned gas stations to turn them into community gardens…and ‘vote’

The winner is the one with the most votes and already in a week, they have gone from 53rd place to 26th. Please take a minute to help them out.

But not so great news on May 16.

Someone went into the green house and took all the vegetable plants Madilynn had started. She had about 40 pepper plants, 6 big tomato plants, 6 cucumbers and melons and 6 goji berries and even her gloves!

Very disappointing!!
